Sense of Place and Liminality

Sense of Place, “Either the intrinsic character of a place, or the meaning people give to it, but, more often, a mixture of both”. Oxford Reference.com

“Liminality is a quality of being in between two places or stages, on the verge of transitioning to something new… Liminality is rooted in this idea of a threshold (limen in Latin), a kind of doorway between the past and the future”. Vocabulary.com

I fell in love with these two concepts while being a Field Archaeologist years ago. The ideas behind their meaning both enchanted me and encouraged me to think and feel deeper. Simply put, archaeology is about ‘connection to the people and places of the past’. Today, there are all kinds of technology and tools to help archaeologists excavate sites. Although, this new way of digging saves time and labour, nothing can replace ‘sensing the energy of place’. Consider, people chose places to live that would provide sustenance and sustainability. The human impact of people in an environment leaves an imprint. If, you are very lucky as an Archaeologist you will feel this investment of energy in the landscape. No map or tool can bestow this special ability.

I’m going to challenge you to take these ideas and definitions behind ‘sense of place’ and apply them to yourself. Have you been able to ‘connect to the people and places of your past’? Have you been able to understand the link between how your ‘Mind, Body, and Soul’ work? There are all kinds of tools and practices in the world of today to help you ‘excavate yourself’, but nothing can really replace the time of listening and feeling into the nature of who you are. Reconnection comes by simply trusting you have meaning and purpose. What energy imprint do you wish to leave for yourself and in your landscape?

I’m going to suggest you enter a ‘liminal space’, and allow time to become reacquainted with yourself? All civilizations have a ‘rise and fall’, and so do we as humans. It is how we learn and advance. We’re living in a time of transition, so isn’t it time to look at your process and rediscover who you are? There are a few in Archaeology that find the ‘liminal spaces of the past’ the most interesting times to study. The questions of how humanity begins again after all is lost is by far the richer landscape to map. Don’t become lost or comfortable in the ‘liminal zone’. Step over the threshold. The ancient practice of Numerology can guide you to your past and future self.

The Mind, Body and Soul Connection

These words have become so common in our present world, that in a sense they have lost their meaning. If we strip these words back to the essential, something new and important can be found.

Mind: Navigator. From childhood onwards we learn survival techniques to keep us safe. We hope that we learn the ethics and morals that our family and community need us to know to act in care for each other. Humankind belongs in the world together, and it is our duty to be responsible for ourselves and all that we share life with.

Body: Vehicle. We are gifted in this life with a sacred flesh and bone body. We need to learn to respect and care for it well, for it is the home of our Mind and Soul.

Soul: Compass. Our Soul is our own inner light. It is eternal and part of the Universe (some say God or Creator, or perhaps the Divine). It has travelled through many lives learning ‘the Lessons of Evolvement’. Everything our Soul learns is shared with the Universe. How did we stop listening to our own Wisdom? It is our Soul that informs our Mind and Body how to act from love. Love is what we are here to learn, through all the challenges and difficulties of being Human. Your true and pure Soul voice can be heard if you remember and learn to listen for it. This can only happen in connected inner quiet and peace. Your Soul never leaves your Body or Mind. You must seek it out, and most importantly learn to trust and use it. It is your 'true North' on the compass and your Guide.

I came upon a poem while researching for my website. I’ve posted it on my Contact page. Let’s look at the words more closely. This is where our work begins.

Mind: I’m worried.

Body: Just relax.

Mind: But, I’m totally lost now.

Body: Just follow me.

Mind: But you’ve never been there before.

Body: Trust me, you’ll love it.

Soul: If you two are quiet, I’ll show you the map.

The Medicine Journal

I live with my husband in a small cottage on a soft chalk hill in Cambridgeshire, England. My garden tumbles down into a stream, that joins a river, that runs out into the Fens. I live out on the 'reach of the river' - out of reach of the everyday world. My village is called Reach.

This is a landscape of water and sky. At times, the quiet can be quite unsettling. The Fens will put you back in touch with your Soul, as there is very little to interrupt that humbling conversation. There is great humility and connection to what Nature brings here. I have found a deep bond to this place. Sometimes, I think we search much of our lives looking for a home for our hearts. The natural world intrinsically knows where it should be and why. But, we as human beings seem to be constantly looking for somewhere to belong, connect, and create 'a Sense of Place'. Perhaps, our hearts might remember if we were to turn the noise of the accepted world down, and return to the land and ourselves.

The Waterland has brought me back to myself. It is here that I discovered Numerology. And, quite like Pythagorus, the vibration, frequency, and energy of this place made me look deeper into how Nature, the World, and perhaps how the Universe works. Through Numerology, I was able to decode and discover the gifts my Soul wished to bring to this life. I have never looked back or questioned where I am now. Every day is a gentle walk of understanding. They say, if you find your Soul gifts life is not work - everything flows like water. I have found this to be true. Perhaps, I can help you do this too. Let me guide you to finding your "Roads of Enlightenment and Expression". It is a wonderful journey of remembering...

"The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature".

Joseph Campbell
